As anyone who’s done home repairs knows, sometimes what seems to be a light project can actually turn into a daunting task. Recently, I had the mind-set to redo an upstairs bedroom. With its recent occupant, now vacated, it needed a heavy duty make-over. Excited about the task at hand, I got a visual of how I wanted the room to look. The walls definitely needed to be cleaned, as well as repainted, the carpet needed to be replaced, and then with just the right furniture . . . it would be a room of beauty.
After finding a nearby ACE hardware store, choosing the right color of paint, selecting the right brushes . . . I was on my way to start my new project. With music playing in the background, I started with the smaller brush (after pouring the paint in my tray) and began to cut-in around the door frames, ceiling, and baseboards. After making some head-way, and upon closer inspection of the walls—I noticed just how bad they really were. Scuff marks, blue marks, scrapes, missing paint, but yet with a stroke of my brush they all vanished. It was a miracle. I stepped back to look at the bigger picture ahead of me and realized that this was going to be a much bigger task than I had originally anticipated. In fact, after all the work putting on the first layer of paint, I knew it would need a second coat.
I started thinking about my own life, and how many marks and scrapes I’ve managed to collect over the years. Sometimes, I too need a “touch-up.” Thankfully, the Master Artist takes out His brush, and with one flick of His wrist, He makes me clean and new again. Sometimes I wonder if He thinks, “Man, this girl sure is a bigger project than I originally anticipated, but I have a vision of how I want to see her develop—so with a little bit of grace, a few touches of mercy, a handful of guidance, and a lot of forgiveness . . . she’ll look and be just what I had in mind.”
